Our History

St. Andrew's at Francis Place was originally named Price Memorial Nursing Home, which was owned and operated by the Franciscan Missionary Brothers. Steeped in proud and solemn traditions of the past, the Franciscan Missionary Brothers provide care to the elderly of all faiths, giving them the opportunity to enjoy life to their fullest potential. The Franciscans have an 800-year tradition of caring for those in need, and they have been a St. Louis presence since 1927 when they opened St. Joseph's Hill, a home for seniors needing continual nursing care. They expanded the home in 1948 due to strong local demand, but even that was not enough to meet the needs of the area. In 1981, the Franciscans opened Price Memorial, which they ran until they decided to pass along the home to a partnership between the Ursuline Sisters and St. Andrew's Resources for Seniors System, two organizations dedicated to enriching the lives of the area's senior population.

The name Francis Place was chosen to honors the Franciscan Brothers, Angela Merici (the founder of the Ursuline Sisters and a member of the Third Order of St. Francis), and Pope Francis. The Ursuline Sisters are part of a worldwide community whose lives and mission are rooted in the Gospel of Jesus and the spirit of their founder, St. Angela Merici. Their lives are enriched and their ministries are sustained by relationships with friends old and new. Ursulines are proud of their rich history and heritage, committed to the challenges of the present, and hopeful about building the future. Engaging society through service and faithful to their mission in the church, today's Ursulines are also involved in spiritual and social services fields with outreach to immigrants, the elderly, the homeless, and other disenfranchised populations.

For the past 50 years, St. Andrew's Resources for Seniors System, a not-for-profit organization, has been the place where seniors, their families, and caregivers find answers. Whether it's occasional help that allows a senior to remain independent at home, a comfortable retirement residence that feels like home, or an assisted living or skilled nursing facility, St. Andrew's can provide whatever you need. St. Andrew's helps seniors find and access the support they need and, most important, help them worry less.
